Chapter Twenty-Two

The farther down they went, the more the temperature dropped. The air became even more saturated with moisture, leaving Blanndynne’s teeth chattering behind Diomedes. No matter how many times he wiped his hands on his trousers, it felt like they were always clammy as he held the mirror out in front of him.

“Is it still working?” Armannii asked.

“Yes,” Diomedes said, trying to keep his annoyance from dripping into his voice. It was the second time Armannii had asked since the spear room.

They walked in silence. Moisture dripped from the stalactites on the ceiling, and every once in a while droplets would land on Diomedes. He wiped a recent drop from his forehead, pausing in the middle of the motion when he rounded another corner.

“Another trap?” Blanndynne asked, stopping next to Diomedes in front of a stone wall with runes carved into it.

“No bodies.” Diomedes glanced around after he’d said it to make sure it was true.

“Not a trap,” Armannii said, pushing past Diomedes to get a better look. The tunnel had narrowed quite a bit the farther down they’d gone, and Diomedes shifted so Armannii could pass him. “A puzzle. Look.” He ran his fingers along the lines of a few of the runes. “There are six of them, and they each represent an element.”

Diomedes cocked his head, his gaze focused on the closest rune to him. “This one is light,” he said, his brow furrowing.

“Right.” Armannii nodded, stepping closer to look at the runes. He stood inches from the wall. “But I’m not sure what to do with them.” Armannii sighed, sending a plume of dust out of the crevices in the wall.

One of the runes lit up.

“How did you—” Blanndynne started, but Armannii cut her off with a loud chuckle.

“It’s the air rune,” he said, his eyes gleaming in the glow of the new light.

Diomedes couldn’t help but grin. “Genius.”

“Why thank you,” Armannii said, dipping into a bow.

“I meant the puzzle. We have to introduce the elements to the runes on the wall.” Diomedes ran his fingers over the light rune. “Blanndynne?”

She stepped up, taking his place in front of the wall, and with a flick of her finger, she sent out a stream of light that flashed over all the runes. The light rune held on to the glow after Blanndynne backed up next to Diomedes.

Diomedes pulled out his canteen, his eyes focused on the rune he recognized for water. He splashed it. A bright cyan glow spread through the wavy lines, and he grinned.

“Looks like we’re on a bit of a timer,” Armannii said, making Diomedes frown.

“What do you mean?”

Armannii pointed to the air rune, which was beginning to dull.

“Refresh it,” Diomedes said, shrugging off Armannii’s concern. But when Armannii tried to blow on the rune again, it didn’t get brighter. It continued to fade in front of their eyes.

“We better get the others finished fast,” Armannii said, and Diomedes nodded.

“What’s next?” Blanndynne asked.

Armannii directed her toward the fire rune. She created a flame in her hands and pressed it against the wall.
